How to prune a palm tree

Remove any hanging, dead or unhealthy fronds. All dry, wilted, or diseased fronds should be removed. when you are pruning palm plants, don’t think you need to prune green, healthy fronds. There is no biological reason to do so and it can stress the tree.

When should palm trees be pruned?

We recommend that you wait until spring to prune your palm tree. Those dead fronds may be somewhat unattractive, but they will help protect the palm from summer’s heat and winter’s cold.

Can I cut back my palm plant?

Palms don’t branch out from the trunk like typical trees. Their source of energy and food comes strictly from their root ball at the base and their fronds at the top.[ Removing these healthy fronds keeps this energy from getting to the plant.] Do not overdo pruning or trimming your palm Trees

Why do you trim palm trees

Just like with other plants, pruning and trimming your palm trees will remove those heavy pieces, that old-growth that’s stumping new growth, and get rid of the dead waste that’s weighing down on your tree. A trimmed palm will thrive if done correctly!

How often should you trim queen palms?

Simply cut frond about 2”-3” from the trunk using a cut that is parallel to the trunk. During summer months it’s common to get some brown tips. It’s OK to just trim off the brown and leave the green portion of the frond. Trimming is usually necessary once or twice a year.
